The
Artie Shaw Orchestra
conducted by Dick Johnson
"This is America's classical music" Dick
Johnson says. And he should know; he is the man Artie Shaw chose to
direct his reconstituted band, and has been leading it ever since.
Shaw always surrounded himself with men of top-notch
caliber, and continued to make them feel wanted by featuring them in
solo passages just about as much as he featured himself. This trait is
continued for audiences to see. Johnson gives recognition to the side
men he introduces for well earned bows after each number.

Something else is at work here, though and Johnson deftly
bring it out. It is the classical music feel that set Shaw apart from so
many others. He had the best arrangers, but for many of the pieces did
his own arranging, and the sense of it still comes through today.
